Missouri Travel Guide

Missouri: Missouri, lovingly known as the Cave State for its impressive network of over 5,000 caves, warmly welcomes visitors with a variety of attractions across its three beloved cities: St. Louis, Kansas City, and Branson. In St. Louis, you’ll find the majestic Gateway Arch, a heartfelt symbol of the spirit of westward expansion that inspires so many. Kansas City enchants with its vibrant arts scene and rich culture, highlighted by the beautiful Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art and its cherished barbecue cuisine that brings people together. Branson is a favorite destination for many, celebrated for its lively entertainment options and the breathtaking beauty of Table Rock Lake that provides a serene escape. I’ve put together this travel guide to help you discover the wonderful attractions Missouri has to offer! Here is my Missouri travel guide outlining major Missouri attractions!

To make it easy for you to navigate the content, I have organized my Missouri travel guide into two sections. (1) A brief introduction to Missouri, a little history, some geography, commute, and weather. (2) Major Missouri attractions, if you wish, you can skip the introduction and move on to the next section, Missouri Attractions.

History: Missouri was warmly welcomed into the union on August 10, 1821, a momentous day for its residents. The state draws its name from the Missouri River, which was named by the Missouri Indians, meaning “canoe haver,” reflecting a deep connection to the land and its rich history. Known affectionately as the Show-Me State, this nickname was introduced by Congressman Willard Duncan Vandiver during a heartfelt speech in Philadelphia in 1899. In his poignant words, he expressed, “I come from a state that raises corn and cotton and cockleburs and Democrats, and frothy eloquence neither convinces nor satisfies me. I am from Missouri. You have got to show me.” This sentiment captures the essence of Missourians’ desire for authenticity and sincerity in their interactions.

Geography: Missouri is geographically situated with Iowa to the north and Arkansas and Tennessee to the south. On the eastern side, it is bordered by Illinois, Kentucky, and Tennessee, while to the west, it shares borders with Nebraska, Kansas, and Oklahoma. The state is commonly referred to as the “Cave State” due to the presence of approximately 5,600 registered caves, with new discoveries continuing to emerge on an annual basis.

Getting There

Flight: Missouri is served by several major airports, including Kansas City International Airport (MCI), Lambert-St. Louis International Airport (STL) and Springfield-Branson National Airport (SGF). These airports provide numerous domestic flights and some international connections, making it convenient to reach various parts of the state.

Drive:  Missouri is easily accessible by car from surrounding Midwestern states. Major highways such as I-70, I-55, I-64, and I-44 connect Missouri to nearby cities and states, making a road trip to explore the state’s attractions a breeze.

Train: For those who prefer traveling by rail, Amtrak offers services that connect major cities in Missouri. The Missouri River Runner line, for example, links St. Louis, Jefferson City, and Kansas City, providing a scenic way to experience the state’s landscape.

Missouri Travel Guide Know Before You Go

Climate: In Missouri, the summer season is characterized by elevated temperatures and high humidity levels, with average temperatures ranging from 80°F to 90°F. Conversely, winter in the state is typically marked by cold and icy conditions, with temperatures frequently falling below 0°F in various regions. The spring season presents mild weather, while autumn is generally regarded as being quite pleasant, creating favorable conditions for a range of outdoor activities. The vibrant colors of fall foliage attract many visitors, while spring brings blooming flowers and a renewed sense of life to the landscape. These seasonal changes contribute to Missouri’s unique charm throughout the year.

Time zone: Central Daylight Time UTC-5

Getting around: To fully experience the diverse attractions of Missouri, renting and driving a car is the best choice, as the main cities—St. Louis, Kansas City, and Springfield—are quite far apart. This allows for scenic drives and the chance to discover hidden gems along the way. While options like Greyhound and Megabus connect these cities and Amtrak offers limited train service, they don’t provide the same flexibility.

Planning Your Trip To Missouri

The Gateway Arch - Missouri

Visiting Missouri outside of the chilly winters and sweltering summer months, spending a minimum of two weeks, or breaking down your trip into multiple visits while staying close to the attractions is the best way to experience this vibrant state!

Missouri offers a stunning array of sights and unique experiences throughout its major cities. Each city has its own distinct charm, making it difficult to choose which ones to explore first. If you can’t experience everything Missouri has to offer in one trip, I recommend dividing your journey into multiple visits. Focus on St. Louis, Springfield, Branson, and Kansas City during separate adventures to make the most of your travels.

Best Time To Visit Missouri: Missouri’s attractions can be enjoyed year-round, but winter can be quite cold, making outdoor activities less appealing. Summers, too, can be hot and humid. Therefore, Spring and Fall are my favorite seasons for visiting. Fall, especially in October and November, offers beautiful autumn colors throughout the state. If you’re a music lover, consider visiting during the Kansas City Jazz & Heritage Festival in the Spring, which adds a lively rhythm to your trip!

Time Required In Missouri: With diverse experiences spread across St. Louis, Springfield, Branson, and Kansas City, I recommend planning at least two weeks to fully enjoy Missouri’s offerings. Alternatively, spend a few days in each major city during separate trips to appreciate what they have to offer. I suggest a minimum of five days in St. Louis, three days in Kansas City, four days in Branson, and two days in Springfield to get the most out of your time.

Hotels In Missouri: Though there are many campsites and vacation rentals available throughout Missouri, if you prefer hotel accommodations, here are some top picks in the major cities, strategically located near key attractions:

  • Hotels in Branson, Missouri:
  • Hotels in Kansas City, Missouri:

Restaurants In Missouri: Missouri is renowned for its delicious cuisine beyond barbecue, with must-try dishes including St. Louis-style BBQ ribs at Pappy’s Smokehouse for an unforgettable taste of the barbecue culture, toasted ravioli from Mama’s on the Hill, a St. Louis classic, fried catfish at The Captain’s Table in Branson with scenic views of Table Rock Lake, a burnt ends sandwich at Joe’s Kansas City Bar-B-Que, a local favorite in Kansas City, and the delightful gooey butter cake from Little Debbie’s Snacks that you can’t miss when in St. Louis.
