White Sands National Monument
This is a must-see, White Sands National Monument is known to be the largest gypsum dune field in the world! The glistening white gypsum sand spread over 275 square miles of desert, with wave-like structures, make it a picture-perfect place. I would recommend driving through the Dunes Drive, stopping at designated parking areas and exploring the dunes by walk, and yes, take a lot of photos.
Timing: Dunes Drive opens at 7:00 a.m. daily, occasionally closed during missile tests on the adjacent White Sands Missile Range, recommend calling ahead.
Closed: Christmas Day (December 25)
Dunes Drive is a 16-mile round-trip starting and ending at the visitor center, which takes approximately 45 minutes. There are picnic spaces, restrooms, and parking zones along the trail.
